HOW TO PLAY

THE BASICS

Every day at 00:00 GMT a new UK railway station is chosen. You're shown a real photo of it — a platform, the concourse, or the exterior — and you get three guesses to name it. Type into the box and pick from the autocomplete list of National Rail stations; there's no free text, so you can't be caught out by spelling.

WRONG GUESSES TELL YOU SOMETHING

A wrong guess isn't wasted: you're told the straight-line distance in kilometres from your guess to the real station, and the compass direction you'd need to travel to get there. Two guesses in, you should be able to narrow it down to a handful of candidates just from distance and bearing alone.

HINTS

Stuck? Open the hint panel to reveal the region and train operating company (TOC) for the mystery station, plus a few letters of its name. More letters unlock as you use up guesses. Using the hint doesn't block you from solving in fewer guesses — it just costs you the bragging rights of a clean solve.

SCORING

You start each puzzle with 500 points. Points bleed away at 2 per second while the clock runs, and each wrong guess costs a flat 120 points. Solve fast and clean for a high score; take your time and you'll still solve it, just for less. If you don't solve it within three guesses, that puzzle scores zero. There's a pause button if you need to step away mid-puzzle without bleeding points.

STREAKS AND SHARING

Solve the puzzle on consecutive days to build a streak, shown at the top of the board. Miss a day and it resets. After each puzzle you can share a spoiler-free grid of your guesses — green for correct, yellow if your wrong guess was at least in the right region, white otherwise — and put your initials on that day's leaderboard.
